Aunque los 26 edificios actuales del hospital[1] datan del siglo XX, el Hospital de la Santa Creu (la última parte de su nombre, «Sant Pau», se añadió en honor al banquero Pau Gil, que pagó los nuevos edificios en el siglo XX) se fundó en 1401 cuando se fusionaron seis pequeños hospitales medievales[2] Los antiguos edificios del hospital, cercanos al centro de Barcelona, datan del siglo XV y ahora albergan una escuela de arte (Escola Massana) y la Biblioteca de Catalunya.

Sant Pau se encuentra en un pintoresco pueblo costero llamado Sant Pol de Mar. Está a una hora de tren del centro de Barcelona, y el viaje en sí es bastante espectacular, ya que la vía del tren sigue la costa. A veces estás a pocos metros del mar, y las olas que rompen casi tocan el tren. Nunca fue así en la línea central hasta Epping.
El restaurante está situado a una calle del paseo marítimo, tiene un bonito jardín y una vista parcial del mar y de los trenes que pasan. Las mesas son grandes y están generosamente espaciadas. Sólo había nueve mesas y veinte cocineros trabajando en la cocina, una proporción excelente que se nota en el tratamiento de los platos. El comedor era luminoso y aireado, con suelo de madera y paredes naranjas. Las mesas tienen manteles de lino blanco y, en nuestra visita, una única gerbera en un jarrón decoraba cada mesa.
La carta de vinos aparece en un libro encuadernado, y no sólo tiene todos los clásicos españoles, sino también muchas buenas selecciones de todo el mundo. Los precios fueron un soplo de aire fresco después de Londres. El champán Veuve Cliquot costaba 73 euros, el Torres Mas la Plana 2002 75 euros, el Alion 2003 91 euros. En el extremo más enrarecido de las cosas, el arre vintage Cuvee Frederich Emile 1983 costaba 371 euros, el Unico 1994 411 euros y el Penfolds Bin 707 205 euros. Se utilizaron copas Riedel.
