My Little Pony: The Magic of Friendship (English: My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic) is a Canadian-American animated fantasy television series based on Hasbro’s My Little Pony line of toys and animated works, and is often referred to by collectors as the fourth generation (also known as “G4”) of the franchise. The series premiered on October 10, 2010 on The Hub (which was renamed Discovery Family on October 13, 2014) and concluded on October 12, 2019. Hasbro selected animator Lauren Faust as the show’s creative director and executive producer. Faust sought to challenge the established nature of the existing My Little Pony line by creating deeper characters and adventurous scenarios; she left the series during season 2, to be replaced by Meghan McCarthy as showrunner for the remainder of the series.
The show follows a studious anthropomorphic pony (later an alicorn) named Twilight Sparkle, as her mentor, Princess Celestia, guides her to learn about friendship in the town of Ponyville. Twilight and her dragon assistant Spike become close friends with five other ponies – Applejack, Rarity, Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie. Each of the ponies represents a different facet of friendship, and Twilight discovers that it is a key part of the magical artifacts known as the “Elements of Harmony.” The ponies travel on adventures and help others in Equestria while solving problems that arise in their own friendships.

Earth ponies do not have wings or unicorn horns, and therefore bear the closest resemblance to real ponies. They are the first class introduced in the My Little Pony franchise. The children’s novel Twilight Sparkle and the Crystal Heart Spell mentions that one of the special qualities is “the strength of a good honest earth pony’s heart.” The main characters in the My Little Pony: The Magic of Friendship series include two earth ponies, Applejack and Pinkie Pie.
Pegasus, or “pegasus ponies,” are ponies with wings and flying abilities – an allusion to the legendary Pegasus. The term “pegasus” is used in the episodes The Sonic Rain-plosion and The Return of Harmony, Part 1, and “pegasus ponies” is used in the episodes A Rough Night and The Sonic Rain-plosion. When referring to a single pony, “pegasus” is almost always used. Pegasus can usually fly and interact with clouds. The main characters in the series include two pegasus: Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy.

In the book The Art of Equestria, Twilight is originally shown with a tail and mane with various shades of blue, and her original cutie mark was a white crescent moon with a yellow five-pointed star, which, according to Mary Jane Begin, “suggests both royalty and a mystical consciousness.”[10] In Magical Mystery Cure, Twilight is shown with a white crescent moon with a yellow five-pointed star, which, according to Mary Jane Begin, “suggests both royalty and a mystical consciousness.”[10
In Magical Mystery Cure, Twilight completes an ancient spell with her deep knowledge of friendship. Princess Celestia tells Twilight that she is ready for the next stage of her life, and transforms Twilight transforms into an alicorn and earns the title of princess.[11] In Magical Mystery Cure, Twilight is transformed into an alicorn.
In Amending Fences, Twilight returns to Canterlot in an attempt to apologize to her former friends for her past actions. She succeeds with Twinkleshine, Lemon Hearts, and Minuette, but Moon Dancer coldly rejects all four of them. Minuette and Twilight compare Moon Dancer’s behavior to the way Twilight used to act.
Twilight tries to be rational in unfamiliar situations. During the investigation in MMMystery on the Friendship Express, Twilight tells Pinkie Pie to stop making nonsensical accusations, and they work together to find clues and solve the mystery.
