Newt travels to Hogwarts to find Dumbledore, who explains that the vial was for a blood pact between him and Grindelwald, which they made when they were young not to fight each other. Although unsure, Dumbledore determines that he may be able to destroy it. In Austria, at Nurmengard Castle, Grindelwald gives Credence a wand and shows him that a chick he has been carrying is actually a Phoenix, which always comes to the aid of the Dumbledores, and reveals to Credence that his real name is Aurelius Dumbledore.

En octubre de 2014 se anunció una segunda película de Fantastic Beasts, y en julio de 2016 Rowling confirmó que había completado el guión. Depp fue contratado en noviembre de 2016, causando cierta controversia debido a las acusaciones de violencia doméstica hechas recientemente contra él. Law firmó en abril de 2017. Tres meses después, en Londres, Newt Scamander visita el Ministerio de Magia para apelar su prohibición de viajar al extranjero y se encuentra con Leta Lestrange, su compañera de Hogwarts y prometida de su hermano auror Theseus. El Ministerio accede a conceder la petición de Newt si ayuda a Theseus a localizar a Credence Barebone en París, pero Newt se niega, por lo que la tarea se encomienda al despiadado cazarrecompensas Gunnar Grimmson. Albus Dumbledore le pide a Newt que salve a Credence de Grindelwald y del Ministerio, mencionando que Credence podría ser el medio hermano perdido de Leta, Corvus.
