The monastery of Santo Estevo de Rivas de Sil, or San Esteban de Rivas de Sil is the best known monastery in the Ribeira Sacra, a must-see place. It is a Catholic monastery complex that is currently used as a Parador de Turismo.
Like the rest of the monasteries of the Ribeira Sacra, possibly its origin is in a hermitage created in the sixth century, which was abandoned with the Muslim invasion. It definitely predates the 10th century. In the 12th century, it became the most important monastery in this region, and one of the main ones in Galicia. It belonged to the order of San Benito.
It is believed that between the 10th and 11th century this monastery was the retreat of 9 bishops, as there are 9 mitres on its coat of arms. In the tenth, eleventh and twelfth centuries, the monastery was very popular, with pilgrimages motivated by these 9 bishops to the place, which achieved fame of sanctity.
In the 19th century, it passed into private hands. Following the approval of the Law of Historical Heritage in 1985, it was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest, and currently operates as the Parador de Turismo de Santo Estevo in 2004. It is the highest category hotel establishment in the Ribeira Sacra.

Like all the monasteries of the Ribeira Sacra, this architectural complex has an eremitic origin. It seems to date back to the 6th century, since it is believed that it was a hermitage founded by San Martín Dumiense to which Santo Estevo would go to retire.
After the canonical reform of the Catholic Monarchs, the Monastery of Santo Estevo de Ribas de Sil became part of the congregation of San Benito de Valladolid.  This is the moment in which its transformation was greater, since in 1530 it became a school of arts for the youngest brothers, an activity that lasted until 1898 when, after the confiscation, they were exclaustrated and the monastery became private property.
Just before arriving, in the place reserved for the cars of the lodgers, there are two of the most typical Galician images: a granary and a beautiful cruceiro with the images of Christ crucified on one side, and the Virgin with her son on her lap on the other.
The Church of Santo Estevo is of late Romanesque style and has a great artistic value. As it is usual, the works of the churches are started from the head of the church. It was begun in the 12th century, it has three semicircular apses and curiously the lateral ones are higher than the central one, something unusual in the Galician Romanesque. The apses have a varied decoration of blind arches on corbels and metopes between them.
